draft guide to promote greener consumer choices

context: China Consumers Association issued a draft of their Green Consumption Guide for public comment on 15 August 2025. The guide provides recommendations for consumers on how they can practice sustainability in daily life, covering areas such as food, travel and resources. Low-carbon or green consumption is growing rapidly as Chinese consumers become more aware of environmental issues and their carbon footprint. 

The latest China Consumers Association guide on green consumption takes into account scientific soundness, environmental protection and feasibility, reports Xinhua. It proposes 50 recommended actions across areas such as food, tourism, resources and daily purchases

  • promoting the clean plate campaign
  • reducing disposable tableware
  • advocating for low-carbon travel
  • promoting energy-saving appliances and rational use of water and electricity 
  • guiding consumers to purchase green-certified products 
  • supporting recycling and reuse of old items 

The guide lists relevant scientific knowledge, practical tips and the benefits such actions will bring

  • environmental benefits highlight the direct impacts of green consumption 
  • individual benefits show how green consumption can make one's life healthier and more convenient 
  • social benefits show how green consumption can help improve community health and public services 

Around two-thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions are related to household consumption. From choosing energy-saving appliances to reducing disposable products, every green consumption choice can accumulate into significant emissions reduction effects.
