2021 national energy work conference

context: 2021 work priorities do not diverge significantly from last year's. 'Speeding up wind and solar power' signals a large scale-up of installations, in tandem with enhanced, nationally determined contributions.

National Energy Administration listed 2021 national energy work priorities at its regular annual work conference on 22 Dec 2020. These underline the two primary objectives of energy security and climate response, and emphasise

  • continuing to increase oil and gas exploration, and improve the entire chain of production, supply, storage and sales
  • reinforcing the fundamental role of coal and coal-fired power
  • speeding up wind and solar power development
  • promoting hydro and nuclear power
  • boosting grid capacity to absorb renewable and energy storage
  • advancing clean and effective development and use of coal
  • optimising grid construction
  • upgrading energy consumption
  • continuing to control energy consumption and use intensity
  • switching to clean heating
  • facilitating tech innovation and speeding up breakthroughs in core technologies
  • deepening reforms in power and oil and gas sectors
