We are seeking a full-time lead analyst/analyst with expertise in China’s, technology, innovation and energy issues. The position is well-suited to candidates who have a demonstrated background in China’s high-tech and energy industries, from its regulations on big tech and AI, to its carbon neutrality pledge and interest in advising global government and business decision-makers. Native-level Chinese, strong research skills, attention to detail, and ability to draft in clear English are required. This position is virtual and can be taken up in any Greater China city.
science, technology and innovation portfolio
The science, technology and innovation portfolio closely monitors and maps the policy landscape as China climbs up the value chain. The portfolio tracks policy changes, industry dynamics and the business environment for both domestic and foreign investment. Topics the portfolio watches closely include, but are not limited to: AI, 5G, ICTs, green technology, hydrogen, electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, new materials; technology transfer and intellectual property rights; cybersecurity and privacy policy; competition law; state research funding and R&D priorities; local innovation systems, innovation centres, development zones and science parks; skilled labour policy; strategic emerging industries and industry policy.
energy and environment portfolio
The energy and environment portfolio closely monitors and maps China’s environment and energy governance and structural transition. Portfolio analysts track policy changes, industry dynamics and the business environment for both domestic and foreign investment. Topics the portfolio watches closely include, but are not limited to: environmental governance, major types of pollution, climate change, environmental regulations’ impacts on industries, power sector reform, oil and gas sector reform, renewable energy development, etc.
duties
- manage portfolio task and junior staff
- keep abreast of domestic debates, signal events, trends, and key actors and agencies
- summarise and translate policy-relevant articles from Chinese to English
- analyse and assess policy movement across the sectors
- draft policy analysis, including reports and longer-form articles
- develop people and agency profiles
- contribute, where appropriate, to other China Policy analysis
- help develop clients and tailor analysis to their needs
- present findings to clients and colleagues
knowledge and skills
- expertise in energy, technology, innovation and/or environment policy in the PRC
- professional standard English (with strong writing skills)
